Chris, many thanks for your efforts, which are much appreciated.  Unfortunately, I can't make any progress, as I always get the message, "No playbills found".  I'll have to find some other approach, but there is nothing else like that website when I'm able to search the playbills.

The British Library has explained to me that blplaybills.org is not a website run by the British Library, so they are not able to give me an answer as to why it is offline.

The images hosted on that page were taken from this dataset, which regrettably is not convenient to browse (the file is 47 GB), but it is free to download under a Creative Commons License: https://data.bl.uk/playbills/

I don't understand how or if the data can be used.  If anyone can work out how searches can be carried out on the playbills, as was previously possible, I would be very interested to know.

Rootschatters may be interested to know that the site is up and running again now, in case anyone wants to search some playbills.
