I would be so very grateful if anyone was willing to find a poem held at Somerset Heritage Centre, regarding my 3rd Great Aunt Catherine Churchill, who was hung 1879 for the murder of her husband.  Below details taken from SHC website.


Printed poem concerning the trial and sentence of the Chard Murderess, Catherine Churchill, who struck her 82 year old husband at Chard with a bill-hook and pushed him into a fire to destroy the mark of the blow. nd, 1879

Have you considered contacting the Heritage Centre to ask how much it would cost to photocopy the document in question?  You obviously have the reference number so a staff member should be able to find it reasonably quickly.

I shall be interested to hear if you succeed in obtaining the poem.  Was that the sort of thing the Victorians did, write poems in connection with murders?

I have emailed and will update here as and when.  I’ve no idea about poems being written in connection with murders to be honest! I’m curious as to who wrote it, a family member or a member of the community? Google hasn’t been of any help, so I’m keen to see what reply I get to my email  :D
