Evan Mawdesley and Bridget Fletcher, Croston, Lancashire 1750s
« on: Sunday 02 April 23 18:19 BST (UK) »
Can anyone find Evan and Bridget's marriage?

It would be around the early 1750s, both born around 1733.  I have found 2 daughters - Alice (b. 1754) and Ellen (no birth, but buried 12 May 1757 @ Croston) so like wise if there are any other children out there, it would help enormously.

Thank you  :)

Ruth - is this the Evan Mawdesley who was buried at Croston in 1805 aged 72? His abode was Mawdesley. (Near Croston)

How do you know his wife's name please, if you haven't found a marriage?

There is confusion between the Parish Registers and the Bishops Transcripts - the filmed record of both are on Ancestry.

Croston was the Mother Church and Rufford records (and other nearby parishes) are shown there.

Bishops Transcripts say Alice baptised 24 Feb 1753 - daughter of Evan and Bridget. Abode is Mawdesley. These are Rufford records in the Croston set.

Parish Registers say Alice baptised 24 Feb 1754 - daughter of Evan and Ann. Abode is Mawdesley. Again these Rufford Registers are in the Croston set.

Actually there was a Bridget Fletcher baptised in Ormskirk in 1733 daughter of Thomas and Alice - abode Burscough (again a nearby township).

Maybe that is where Rutht obtained a surname for the 'wife' of Evan.

I can't see a marriage yet - but that doesn't mean it's not there somewhere!!

Just to add to this, there is also a discrepancy in the YEAR for the burials of Evan Mawdesley and Bridget Mawdesley - between the Parish Register and the Bishops Transcripts.

Amazingly this couple died in the same month and year (probably 1805) - Bishops Transcripts say 1806.

Details from Parish Register of Croston are;

Evan Mawdesley died Aug 4th 1805 - of Mawdesley, Farmer. Age 72. Apoplexy. Buried on South Side of Church Yard. (Burial was on Aug 6th 1805).

Bridget Mawdesley, Widow, died Aug 27th 1805 - of Mawdesley. Age 73. Fever. Buried on South Side of Church Yard. (Burial was on Aug 30th 1805).

Bishops Transcripts are NOT as detailed and, as mentioned, show the year for both burials as 1806.

So it looks like Evan WAS married to a Bridget - but I still haven't found a marriage (if they did marry of course).

Evan Mawdesley died Aug 4th 1805 - of Mawdesley, Farmer. Age 72. Apoplexy. Buried on South Side of Church Yard. (Burial was on Aug 6th 1805).

Evan has an entry in the Lancashire Wills & Probate 1457-1858 index on FindMyPast:

First name(s): Evan
Last name: Mawdsley
Year: 1805
Date 20 Aug 1805
Occupation: Farmer
Place: Mawdsley
Archive: Lancashire Archives
Archive reference: 625A/69
Source: Lancashire Archives Probate Index Archdeaconry of Chester (supra wills 1800-1858)
Document ordering link: https://www.lancashire.gov.uk/libraries-and-archives/archives-and-record-office/order-a-copy/

Would be interesting to view, as wills usually contained the names of living children and often grandchildren. Sometimes they even mention more distant relations, such as in-laws, cousins etc. Not sure if any of these wills have yet been digitised, as I have never researched in this area of the country.

That was a good idea Queenie.

I am not aware of any Lancashire Wills being published on-line. I have always ordered mine from Lancashire Archives - at a cost of course, but from memory it wasn't much. As you say, Wills are so useful for naming relatives.

The entry at the actual Archives is;

"Document reference
   WCW/Supra/C625A/69
Title
   Archdeaconry of Chester Probate Records
Description
   Testator's name: Evan Mawdsley
Occupation/status: farmer
Place: Mawdsley
Contents: will, wrapper
Date
   20th Aug 1805
Level
   Item
Access
This material is available to view at Lancashire Archives. See our website or contact us for more details."

Alternatively Queenie has provided an ordering link via Find My Past.
