Adam Craik of Arbigland
« on: Monday 03 April 23 11:12 BST (UK) »
Trying to find more detailed information on Adam Craik of Arbigland House, Kirkbean parish, Dumfriesshire and his 2nd wife, Mary Aglionby, daughter of John Aglionby of Nunnery, Cumberland.
All I know to date is that they were married about 1713, and he was possibly drowned near Flimsby, Cumberland in 1735 or 1736. They are said to have had 9 children? I can find baptisms to 5, all bap at Flimsby - Ann 1720, Elizabeth 1722, Margery 1723, Mary 1724 and another Mary 1730.
Any more details or info gratefully received.

Many thanks to both for your replies. I think I need to access the main Dumfries records to try and identify the second family of Adam. Many thanks for the info you've sent on. Regards Craig

Are you only interested in BMDs etc or other references eg.

If you google "google books peter rae 1746" it should return his "History of the rebellion rais'd against His Majesty ...." which can be read online free.
Craik is mentioned on page 245.

He was recorded as Member of Parliament Nov 1713, Mar 1714, Feb 1716, Oct 1722 and Jan 1727  representing the Stewartry of Kirkudbright. This last parliament also included an Adam Craik of Duchra representing the Stewartry of Kirkudbright.

For MPs I usually check out   https://www.historyofparliamentonline.org/research/members

Not a lot under Craik but plenty under Aglionby which you might want to pick through.

The Aberdeen Press and Journal, 5 Aug 1782, reported the drowning near the English coast of an Adam Craik, Esq., jun., Arbigland while crossing from Saturness (Southerness?) Point to the Cumberland coast.

A separate report names him as only son of William Craik, Surveyor General of Customs, Dumfries. The sinking occurred near Allonby, spitting distance from Flimby.

Coincidence?

Added - one report states the body was found at Dubmill and gave his age as 44.

I have mentioned Adam Craik of Duchra. There is a petition dated 1735 by "Mary Craik, eldest daughter of the deceast Adam Craik of Duchrae".
Just found the burial - 8 Jan 1831, place St. Michael, Dumfries, Adam Craik of Duchrae". Yet to spot a 1735/36 burial.

Hi. That's great. Many thanks for all these refs. I had found a ref to his having drowned near Flimsby but in 1735-36. All these sources and bits of info are a big help. I need to investigate the Craig/ Craik baptisms too. There seems to have been a habit of including Adam as a middle name for some reason so the Craig ones might well fit in. Thanks again. Much appreciated.
