Not sure of how common the name Craik/Craick was but given the location -

"Principal Acts of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland convened 14 May 1741"

Reference to the Commissioners to determine an Appeal of Thomas Simson, Innkeeper of Carsthorn, in the Parish of Kirkbean, from a Sentence of the Synod of Dumfries, in a process of Scandal brought against him by Janet Craick, an unmarried woman. 25 May, ult sess.

If you are down that way it's worth visiting the birthplace on the Arbigland estate of John Paul Jones, the pirate who is regarded as the "father of the American navy". My wife and I were there once and enjoyed watching the video and getting a tour from the friendly curator who was delighted to get some visitors on a quiet day.

Will try and do that Harry. Thanks for the suggestion and the link. I'm based in Edinburgh but have never explored that neck of the woods. Will make a point of doing that this summer. Might come across some more info on Adam Craik and his elusive 2nd wife Mary Aglionby. She doesn't seem to exist after her children's births!!!
