Edward Tidy and Ann Porter - can a Chelsea pensioner marry?
« on: Monday 03 April 23 22:07 BST (UK) »
Whilst researching the Porter family of Boston I have found a marriage between Ann Porter and Edward Tidy on 18th January 1774 in Boston and on the record he is listed as in the First Regiment of Dragoons.  I'm not sure if this is Ann Porter from my family, but I'm intrigued as I have found three records in Ancestry for an Edward Tidy as a Chelsea Pensioner, so could a Chelsea Pensioner marry and if so what are the chances of him travelling to Boston from London to do it?  The first record for an Edward Tidy in Chelsea shows him as from the First Regiment of Dragoons and in residence on 14th November 1771 and the reason for him being a pensioner is due a fall from his horse and that he's from Horsham.  A second record is from November 14th 1773 and all the details are the same, but this time he is recorded as being from the 3rd Regiment of Dragoons.  Finally there is an entry from 14th November 1775 where he is shown as from the 2nd Regiment of Dragoons and again the other facts are the same.

Could there be two Edward Tidy's serving in the same regiment at around the same time and if not could a Chelsea pensioner marry and return to London after the wedding?

With all three dates being 14th November I'm guessing there has been some mistranscription of the years. Can you post links to the images please? The only one I've found is Edward Tiddy, 2nd Dragoons, admitted 14 November 1775.

He was only admitted as a pensioner once - on 14 November 1775, at the age of 32 years and 9 months. All the images have the same age for him.

On this image, all we see of the date is 14 N....:

And on this one, the final digit is partially obscured. 14 November 177?

This one is also slightly obscured, but it does appear to be 14 November 1775.

Are you sure he was not temporarily an in pensioner? Most Chelsea Pensioner we’re out Pensioners, there was no restriction on them marrying. I have a couple of out pensioners who married after leaving the army.

I'm not sure about anything about him, as I only came across the records this week and just assumed a Chelsea pensioner would be a resident in London.  Thanks to Shaun J having a closer look than I did, it appears they are all for the same date 14/11/1775), but they do appear to be 3 separate entries and on 2 he's listed as First Regiment and one 1 as Second Regiment, hence some of my confusion.

Thanks for all your help on this and I'll see if I can find Mr and Mrs Tidy post marriage.
