Address in St George's Fields - King's Bench Walk
« on: Tuesday 04 April 23 02:19 BST (UK) »
I am trying to locate where my ancestor lived from statements made during his Old Bailey trial in 1792.  One witness stated "I went to the house of the prisoner, in St. George's Fields".  Google maps tells me that St George's Fields is just north of Hyde Park.
Another witness stated "then we took the coach over to his house in King's Bench Walk, St. George's Field".  When I checked this on Google maps King's Bench Walk is in or near Holborn, some miles from St George's Fields.
Would anyone know if there is another King's Bench Walk in St George's Field or where I could find a map of London from the 1790s or early 1800s that might show St George's Field.
Many thanks
Kessa

A description:

Kings Bench Walk
Bennet’s Row
StGeorge’s Fields
The fourth on the R about 1/8 mile from Blackfriar’s Road.
It extends to Higler Lane.

I will see if I can find it on a map shortly.  :)

I don’t know if this link will work but this is possibly the general search area:
https://www.locatinglondon.org/

Keep in mind that if Kings Bench Walk is small, it may not be marked on any maps.

I think this link will take you to the right part of the map to show King’s Bench Walk:
https://www.romanticlondon.org/explore-horwoods-plan/#18/51.50169/-0.10271

If not:
Find The Obelisk (at the intersection of five streets)
Follow the road north
Pass Higler Lane
The next street on the right is Bennets Row
Follow Bennets Row, and the third street along is Kings Bench Walk

Thank you so much for all your time and effort for me.  I understand now that there was a St George's Fields in Southwark and can see where Kings Bench Walk was in the old map and it is now Kings Bench Street in the modern Google map.  This gives me a greater understanding of where my ancestor lived.  The old maps are wonderful and I will closely follow them for other relatives homes.
Thank you again.

I’m glad you’ve found it Kessa. Some areas of London are unrecognisable today, with many streets and buildings long gone. Though much changed over the centuries, it’s nice that the street is still there.  :)

Yes, I am very lucky it is still there and I had a walk along it via google maps.  Not much to look at but I am grateful to be able to see it.
