Place in Wolverhampton - The Lanes??
« on: Thursday 06 April 23 02:27 BST (UK) »
Looking at the parish registers of St Peters Wolverhampton for baptisms in 1745 I can see that a number of entries have the parents "of the Lanes" (see attached two scans).  Could this have been a place in the 1740s?  I'd be grateful for any help.
Thanks

It sounds more like the way that an area in the town might have been known (but maybe just an informal name) rather than another settlement. On the other hand, most entries in the register don’t give the abode, so why single out “the Lanes”? It suggests that there was something different about it compared with most of the town.
It might be worth approaching  Wolverhampton Archives.

I noticed that a few later bapstim entries mentioned "in the Lanes" which made me wonder if this was the place the child was baptised rather than in the main church??  :-\

I've emailed the Wolverhampton Archives and hopefully they will know the answer.  I'll post their reply here.
Thanks for your interest.

“Lanes” here refers to generic lanes, rather than a specific place. I think that the suggestion made above, that it is the place now known as “Lanesfield”, is most probably right, because it was a settlement not far from, but separate from, the town itself, which would explain why the individual’s abode was noted. Hopefully Wolverhampton Archives will throw further light on the question.

There does exist  (and seems available to buy on line, also available free to download on the website GOTZFRIED).

The GOTZFRIED map - seems to have a short list of the main street, but it has an enlarged etching of St Peter's Church and does show all the small houses in the Town etc.

A Plan of Wolverhampton surveyed in 1750 by Isaac Taylor, engraved by T Jefferys, with the number of houses and inhabitants, and a S view of St Peter's Church, and the School.
