What became of Anne Preen & her children?
« on: Thursday 06 April 23 12:55 BST (UK) »
I have an Anne Wallater who was born in around 1829 in Cardington, Shropshire. There is a baptism in Cardington of an Anne Wallater that could well be her - 19 Apr 1829 parents Thomas Wallater and Mary (possibly nee Harper).

Anne married Charles Preen in Church Stretton on 18th Dec in 1848.

I have Anne in 1851 and 1861 with her husband and children. Details as follows:

1851 - Holly Hurst
Charles Preen - Head - Married - 26 - agricultural labourer - Salop, Cardington
Ann Preen - Wife - 22 or 28 (hard to read) - her occupation is hard to read too - Salop, Cardington
Martha Preen - Daughter - 1 - Salop, Cardington

1861- Holly Bush Hall/House?
Charles Preen - Head - Married - 36 - Farm labourer - Salop, Cardington
Anne Preen - Wife - Married - 32 - Salop, Cardington
Martha Preen - Daughter - 11 - Salop Cardington
Stephen Preen - Son - 7 - Leebotwood
Edward Charles Preen - Son - 5 - Wellington
Mary Elizabeth Preen - Daughter - 3 - Little Wenlock
Hannah Lucy Preen - Daughter - 11 months - Buildwas (Hannah was baptised as Annie Lucy)

My issue with Anne is that I've been unable to find her post-1861. There is no 1871 census I can find with her in it - nor her younger children. I know her husband Charles Preen died in Church Stretton in 1868 so is it likely Anne re-married? There is a marriage for an Anne Preen in 1872 in Church Stretton that could be her, but this doesn't account for her being missing in 1871.

Can anyone help me find Anne and her children post-1861? I'd love to know where they were, and if she re-married and had other children.

There is potential evidence of her daughter, Ann Preen, in the newspaper for for 1871, which backs up Tazzie's findings as it's just up the road.

Shrewsbury Chronicle - Friday 09 June 1871, page 5 of 8.

Quote
FATAL ACCIDENT - On Tuesday an inquest was held before Corbert Davis Esq. touching the death of a carrier named George Jones, which occurred at Longnor a day or two previous. The deceased, it appeared, was in his cart, and was lifting out some flour to a girl named Ann Preen, when the pony started and the deceased fell from the cart and injured his spine. R. Wilding Esq was examined as to the nature of the injuries, and a verdict of 'Accidental Death' was returned.

Obviously it could be a different Ann Preen, but her being described as a girl in 1871 seems about right to me.
;D Doing my best, but frequently wrong ;D
:-* My thanks to everyone who helps me, you are all marvellous :-*
