Saint Dionis Backchurch, marriage record 1652
« on: Thursday 06 April 23 16:11 BST (UK) »
I noticed that the record of the marriage of John Barrington (should be Dorrington) to Fortune Smith 10 Mar 1652 Saint Dionis Backchurch includes what was transcribed as "Mrs" in several genealogy databases. Here it is in familysearch https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V52H-NNQ. I think this should be Miss. The only thing I know about Fortune is that her father was William Smith, woodmonger (Middlesex) according to a source related to the marriage. This is another reason why I think this title is Miss. Thanks for your opinion!

At this period Mrs stands for Mistress and was often used a mark of respect and social status. It does not imply that she was previously married.
