Grimes Family Irishtown/Ringsend
« on: Thursday 06 April 23 21:02 BST (UK) »
Hi my name is Andrew Grimes and I'm trying to dig deeper into my family name i've only gotten back to my third great-grandfather John Grimes but I'm trying to go back even further than that. John Grimes born 1826 (Maybe)-1886 I don't know who he married as I can't find any record but he had a son Robert Grimes born 1854-1920. I know for a Fact that they came from irishtown but I also have sources that John came from skerries which is what I've been told that my name comes from there but I'm not quite sure as of now and as far as I can remember They have all been Sailors or Fishermen But If anyone can help me with this I would be so grateful

Looking at baptisms, I can’t see one for Robert yet.

There are other possibilities but only that.

John was a widower on his death.
There is a death for Bridget Grimes, Fish woman, but sadly no address or family members given.

Baptism
Mary Ann Grimes - parents John and Bridget Walsh

Marriage Bridget Grimes, Ringsend - Father John, a Sailor

Marriage - John Grimes and Bridget Walsh - 1847

These may/may not be relevant but you can take a look.

Where do you have the Skerries connection?

I see a few Grimes of Skerries - some here
http://www.willcalendars.nationalarchives.ie/search/cwa/home.jsp
Several dates for John Grimes of Skerries too in Crew Lists as there are for Grimes, Ringsend.
Robert shows Ringsend as his residence on marriage, as did Bridget Grimes.
Irishtown and Ringsend are close.

There is a newspaper snippet November 1871, Midland Counties Advertiser
Re a James Slattery, who drowned.
“…two fishermen named John Grimes and James Mordaunt were rowing with deceased from the beach at Ringsend, opposite the coast guard station.”

Maybe you could find records - desth, marriages etc for John Grimes, Skerries which may help you decide.

With regard to the newspaper snippet, you can see it on Find My Past, Irish newspapers. I do not have full access, although, I doubt there would be more information than quoted.

There are Grimes family members with your first names in both Ringsend and Skerries. As your records are Ringsend/ Irishtown, I would favour that area but I do understand the difficulty.

If you search this site https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/, Skerries entries are in Balrothery district and Ringsend entries are Dublin/Dublin South.
