Alexander Campbell Birth, Monmouth?
« on: Thursday 08 September 05 10:28 BST (UK) »
 ???
Hi,
can anyone help me with this problem?
I am looking for the birth of ALEXANDER CAMPBELL, I have him on the 1871 Census for Middlesbrough, Low east st.  It says he was born abt 1864 in Monmouth, Wales. I know his mother was ELIZABETH CAMPBELL but not sure about his father, Elizabeth married DANIEL DAVIES in Stockton reg office 1865. Her father was JAMES CAMPBELL.
CAN ANYONE HELP?
THANKS,
MAZZ
 ;)

Hi Mazz, as you have his mothers name and an approx DofB have you approached the local registry office to see if they have any record? - just a thought

Sorry I thought you meant Monmouth Town not the county of Monmouthshire, perhaps try one at a time Monmouth and then Newport M ???

The contact info for all the registry offices is on

Should have made it clear that they are not necessarily the only 2 registry offices in Monmouthshire, but they are the two I'd try first.

Mazz, apparently you can also ask the GRO to search, although it does cost.  I read it in a post the other day, but it has taken me a while to find it.

It's at http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,86774.msg365524.html#msg365524

Where CatOne said
"If you apply to the GRO in writing, specifying childs and fathers name, rather than online, for an extra few pounds (was about £4 last time I did it, so total for certificate was £11.50 I think) they'll "search" the year you think she was born, plus a year either side, for the correct birth with matching father."

Perhaps the same applies if you know the mothers name ??? it might be worth asking

Hello
Hope the following may be of some help.
In 1871 Elizabeth`s  place of birth is Merthyr Tydfil
In 1851 there seems to be only one suitable Elizabeth  and family in Glamorgan as follows.
The  family address is about 5 houses from Penydarren lodge,
The neighbouring enumeration district is Penydarren.

1851 Glamorgan
Merthyr Tydfil Upper

CAMPBELL MARGARET WI M 47 - GLA MERTHYR TYDFIL

CAMPBELL JANE DA U 19 MINE BURNER GLA MERTHYR TYDFIL

CAMPBELL MARY DA U 17 MINEBURNER GLA MERTHYR TYDFIL

CAMPBELL ELIZABETH DA - 14 FILLER GLA MERTHYR TYDFIL

CAMPBELL DAVID SO - 12 MINE DOORBOY GLA MERTHYR TYDFIL

CAMPBELL JAMES SO - 9 - GLA MERTHYR TYDFIL

CAMPBELL JOHN SO - 5 - GLA MERTHYR TYDFIL

PROSSER MARY VR W 54 PARISH SUPPORT GLA MERTHYR TYDFIL

In 1861 there is an Elizabeth Campbell aged 24 unmarried ,in service in Bedwelty parish Monmouthshire.RG9 4001 F 73 P 12.
She is at 3 Watchmakers Row Rumney About 4 miles from Penydarren
Her place of birth is given as Glamorgan ,Pendarren(i think).
If she gave birth to Alexander in the vicinity then the Registration district from
July 1861 for Bmd purposes would have been Bedwelty Monmouthshire.
