quick update Pearline s mother was actually Marion Johnson
daughter of Thomas L johnson

i reread the birth and thers an m under race column which may be significant

there is a photo of him on naturalization papers.

sorted that out on tree at least

there is an extensive tree on ancestry called JOHNSONS OF ERUTREA but they are blocked at william lightbourne

So that was the connection between William Lightbourn and Thomas L Johnson. Good to know. I looked at the birth places and Thomas was not born in the same place or even on the same island as William, Priscilla Johnson, and Estelle Johnson.

There are plenty more handwriting conundrums

The scribblings on boat passages say things like daughter of no.3

At first I thought it meant 3rd daughter but it refers to the person on line 3 of the manifest

Ive laboriouslyn gone thru the links Bart and Ohio posted looking at original documents and subsequentn+ precious pages a strain in the eye !

I think other  Johnson s on the same ship s maybe of interest

The key person for me is Marion JOHNSON.daughter registered to Thomas L JOHNSON

but I'm going to ask moderator.s to transfer to immigrants emigrants boards

Had conversation.with neighbour from Azores
About mixing of races on islands ..he has an African grandfather himself

M the race category given on Marion's birth
Meaning mullatto ...so presumably her father was white ....could be son of reverend William lightbourne

Only a hunch for now

On boats to USA Thomas L JOHNSON and siblings are registered as African

In USA  census I don't know how they decided to class races in the early 1900s  but it probably similar to modern definitions

My friends mixed race children are referred to as white when they go to Ghana and black in UK .

The challenge now is to find whether any of rev William lightbourne s ancestors were from Cornwall .

"Sandra" did post an obituary which showed that rev .William LIGHTBOURN s wife Ollie Belle ROBERTS died 8 Dec 1929. Miami Florida age 52

posted 1941 plane manifest stating Thomas L JOHNSON. Lived  6534 NE 14 CT

In 1947 directory  Willie LIGHTBURN
Lived at same address

In conclusion I believe Willie ( with perline )+ William Roger LIGHTBOURN may be same man

Or may have worked for this family !

In shops manifest he is described as 5'8" light skinned brown eyes black hair ( or grey in later manifests )
Back & forwards from Miami to Florida

Correction

Definitely not the same man
The one who changed his name from Johnson to his stepfathers name was white

The one with Perline was black.
