Thanks so much for that ( I don't know why it didn't come up on ancestry )

Priscilla was a  young grandmother 34
if those ages are correct .

This also shows that he did not choose to change his own surname

I'm leaning towards a JOHNSON  woman being his birth mother and Lightburn being a potential birth father .

Also that his crossing was earlier than stated on naturalization so I can look for an earlier one .

What was the name of his contact friend in 1940
Mrs Cora ? Sto..halt ?

& Does his signature contain a middle initial or is it a flourished L of his surname

now have husbands departure Nov 1913 with her given as person in home residence

There is a Cora Stovall on the census page you posted in Reply #2.
I've heard of the name Stovall, but not Stoball. Without trying to match up the columns, I'd guess that Cora['s husband*], if black, was born in the U.S., not the West Indies.

My guess is that it is the "L" of his surname, with a space between it and the rest of the name.

The smith step  children must belong to " Aguilar" from a previous marriage
The name is Aquilla, not Aguilar.
Louise is too old to be Aquilla's daughter.
