There are some references to Andrew Newton in the newspaper archives on FindMyPast. In 1855, one of them mentions that Mrs. Newton had a sister, Mary Ann Rose. I think she may have been her sister-in-law, because a number of trees have her as Mary Ann Abbott.

At that time in-law relatives were often referred to without the suffix - so a brother or sister in law was called my brother or sister (see lots of Jane Austen for examples!)

Thanks, Michael - yes, I've noticed that as well. So far all the other evidence points to Sarah being the daughter of John Sidney and Rebecca Flowers, born in Norwich, but married twice in Ramsey - first to William Abbott and second to Andrew Newton.

I appreciate your input :)

I was checking the newspaper references and came accross another reference to a Newton in Ramsey.

He was John Newton who married Rebecca Wright. The censuses give his birth place as Swaby, althought there are no baptisms there.

I am not sure why I missed the following yesterday:-

He appears on a lot of trees, together with Andrew, but his birth place is Swarby.

They have his parents as Samuel Newton (1757-7th May 1821 in Ramsey) and Mary Andrew (1757 in Osbournby-2 Oct 1837 in Ramsey)

Samuel and Mary married on 18th December in Osbournby, I believe pronounced Osunby, which is near Swarby.

To find the newspaper references, search in the 'What else?' section, rather than on first and last name, with Andrew Newton Ramsey. There are lots of other references to other Newtons of Ramsey if you leave out Andrew, particularly from 1800-1849 and 1850-1899

Thanks for the additional information :) In the transcription of Andrew's will I found on Ancestry, Andrew does mention a brother John.

As for the newspaper references, I had yesterday off and spent much of my day doing exactly what you mention below - found several very interesting references!

Thanks again!!

Earlier, there is a very short PCC will for Mr. Sidney (on ancestry)
Will of John Sidney, Gardener of Saint Etheldred Norwich, Norfolk
14 May 1821
PROB 11/1644/37
https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D141368

Beloved wife Rebecca.
I think the will is dated 1817. He died in 1819, there was an inquest, it's in the newspapers. He was buried at St Etheldreda.
Rebecca Sidney died without proving the will, and an administration with the will annexed was granted 14 May 1821 to Rebecca Maltman.
Index to death duty registers says Rebecca Maltman's residence was Ramsay, Hunts.
Was she a daughter of John and Rebecca?

There is a burial at Bury cum Hepmangrove, Hunts, 5 April 1820, of Rebecca Sidney. Age 74.
Is that John's widow?

A PCC administration in May 1821 for Rebecca Sidney.
Administratrix Rebecca Maltman, Ramsey, Huntingdon.

a burial for a William Abbott in April 1834 in Ramsey

So that must be a different William Abbott, as his will was proved in February 1834.
Maybe
20 Dec 1833, Ramsey
William Abbott
Age 76.
