Walter North
« on: Monday 10 April 23 10:56 BST (UK) »
Hi there,
Hoping to be able to break down a brick wall.  Searching for Walter North, the man named as the father of Henry Norman "Harry" Williams, born in Port MacDonnell, South Australia on 2 October 1900.  Harry's Mum was Elizabeth Marie Florence "Molly" Williams who was also born in Port MacDonnell in Dec 1876 and passed unwed in Fitzroy, Melbourne Feb 1960.  Harry was raised in Port MacDonnell by his maternal grandparents (who were named on his marriage certificate as his parents!)
There is no marriage that I can find of between Walter North and Molly, but there is not a lot of information I can locate anywhere about Walter North.  The only possible piece of information I have found is of a Walter Samuel James North who was a Station Hand and there was a deceased estate notice placed in a gazette in 1936.  Uncertain if this is the same Walter North.
Possibly there may be an indigenous link, but I am not certain how to go about searching, so any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
With thanks

There was a Walter Benjamin NORTH, born at Marryatville in 1877 to Benjamin and Ellen (HALL).  He died in 1918 after an accident with a tram and I get the impression he wasn't married.  There is plenty on Trove about him.  You would really need to get on the DNA merry go round to find if you can match with someone.

Family search.org has SA school registers. Henry Norman Williams registered 1906, born Oct 1900 at Port McDonnell and parent given as Matthew Williams. Was this his grandfather who had adopted him? This would explain why he listed his grandparents as his parents on his marriage cert as he may have always known them from a small baby as his parents. Not uncommon for g parents to raise illegitimate chn.
Doesn't really help you with Walter North who seems elusive.

* Were and when was birth registered?

* What name for informant?

* Place of birth is just Port MacDonnell, or something like an address?

Thank you Shume, yes Matthew was the grandfather as at some point Molly left town and went to live in Melbourne, so Matthew and his wife must have raised Henry.

Thanks Wivenhoe, we have ordered a copy of the birth certificate to gather the name of the informant and the father's occupation.  Would be interesting to see if that links up with his occupation of a painter in another comment.

I guess it's possible that potentially someone living in Adelaide could meet up with someone living at the southern most point of South Australia in those days!  Stranger things have happened!
