Birth records needed for two Ayrshire ancestors
« on: Monday 10 April 23 22:11 BST (UK) »
Hi all.

I was hoping someone might be able to help me find some birth records for two of my great-great grandparents, who were both born in Ayrshire in the early 19th century. They were married in 1842 in Wigtownshire but their parish record for the marriage is sketchy on details to say the least.

Alexander Gibson
1841 census - Age 25 (resident Otterden Gate, Maybole, Ayrshire)
1851 census - Age 34, born Tarbolton, Ayrshire (resident Kirkmaiden, Wigtownshire)
1861 census - Age 45, born Tarbolton, Ayrshire (resident Leswalt, Wigtownshire)
1871 census - Age 51, born Tarbolton, Ayrshire (resident Leswalt, Wigtownshire)
1881 census - Age 65, born Tarbolton, Ayrshire (resident Kirkmaiden, Wigtownshire)
1883 death - Age 70, parents John Gibson and Marion Dryman? (resident Kirkmaiden, Wigtownshire)

So Alexander was likely born in Tarbolton, between 1813 and 1820.

Janet Ritchie
1841 census - Age 20 (resident Tarbolton, Ayrshire)
1851 census - Age 31, born Tarbolton, Ayrshire (resident Kirkmaiden, Wigtownshire)
1861 census - Age 42, born Tarbolton, Ayrshire (resident Leswalt, Wigtownshire)
1871 census - Age 48, born Tarbolton, Ayrshire (resident Leswalt, Wigtownshire)
1875 death - Age 57, parents *blank* Ritchie and Margaret Cowan (resident Kirkmaiden, Wigtownshire)

And Janet too was likely born in Tarbolton, between 1818 and 1823.

I note his occ was Tilemaker

There is an 1841 entry for him in Maybole & he may be with 2 brothers Thomas Gibson 20 & Robert 15 - both tilemakers

1851 shows Robert b 1828 married to Christina.  Brother Thomas b 1824 also in household - both b Tarbolton

John Gibson married (or contracted with, depending on what the original says) Marion Drinnan in Tarbolton on 30th November 1810.

In the 1841 census for Tarbolton, there is a Marion Gibson, 50, washer, with daughters, Mary, 20, embroiderer, and Isabella, 10. Perhaps it's the same family.

Looking at the 1841 census for Janet Ritchie in Tarbolton, she is staying with William Dunlop, 60, silk handloom weaver, and his wife, Margaret, 45. Also there, is Hugh Cowan, 85, independent.

William Dunlop married Margaret Cowan at Tarbolton on 5th June 1835; probably a second marriage for him. The Hugh is, therefore, probably Margaret's widowed father, and probably Janet's grandfather.

A Hugh Cowan married Margaret Strehorn (usually Strawhorn) in Tarbolton on 7th February 1783.
