I note the shortage of baptism records of this surname in the parish of Crimond (only 19 in total up to the start of civil registration.

I also note from the New Statistical Account of 1845 http://www.rootschat.com/links/01s8d/ that about a fifth of the population of the parish were adherents of the Episcopal Church, so perhaps the Turriff family were of that persuasion? In theory the Church of Scotland was supposed to record all baptisms irresepctive of religious denomination, but in practice this was not always done.

The surviving records of the Episcopal Church are not on Scotland's People, and are not always easy to find.

This would explain the lack of records on scotlands people  ::) many thanks to everyone who has replied I appreciate all of your help !!

Only partly. There are a lot of gaps in the records. Read that article about Crimond from the New Statistical Account and you'll see that the minister commented that people were negligent about getting baptisms recorded.

There's another complication, though I don't think it applies in this case, which is that there was a major split in the Church of Scotland in 1843, when a large proportion of congregations left the CoS and founded the Free Church of Scotland. Many of the surviving records of the FCoS and other breakaway sects are in the 'Other Churches' section of Scotland's People, but I did look and your Jane and family are not listed.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

How confusing.

In 1861 there is family living in     Fraserburgh with William born in Crimond.  I wonder whether Robert Turriff should have been listed as husband instead of father??

William Turriff    36    Head b Crimond
Isabella Turriff 39    Wife
Mary Turriff 10    Daughter
Margaret Turriff 8    Daughter
Isabella Turriff 5    Daughter
Christian Turriff4 Mo    Daughter

The trouble with this family is I don’t appear to be able to prove anything and the fact I feel I’m going round in circles is I believe I have the family but no proof  ::)

Thanks thus far for your help Kay it is very much appreciated!
