Help locating my Nans Father
« on: Friday 14 April 23 12:57 BST (UK) »
My Nan born 1927 in Derbyshire was born out of wedlock and took on her mums surname, birth certificate has no Father named. My nan has mentioned his name potentially being John Frost however the surname king has also been mentioned. He potentially lived on Balmoral road in Derby and worked as a Draughtsman for Rolls Royce.

I know its a long shot however perhaps someone can help shed some light on whom my great grandfather was. I am in the process of doing an Ancestry DNA test which could hopefully help pinpoint who he was.

Thanks
Hawkey, Moore, Hillam, Kampfraath, Brockbank, Woodward, Rushforth, Budding.

It would be impossible to speculate given you have given no names for your grandmother or her mother.

Given the uncertainty you would be best to wait until you receive your DNA results

The 1911 census for Derbyshire has 18 entries for John Frost born between 1890 & 1910

There are 137 male King surnames for that same birthyear range

So Gertrude was around 36 when the child was born and never married - died 1986

Things may be clearer when you receive the DNA results

Are you sure it was Balmoral Road that was mentioned?

I considered looking at residents of Balmoral Road in the 1921 census, so I did an address search on FindMyPast for Balmoral Road, Derby and found no matching addresses in any census. On modern maps there is a Balmoral Road in Borrowash, but looking on Streetview that is clearly modern housing, and newspaper articles referring to Balmoral Road, Borrowash don’t start until relatively recently. I had a quick look for any earlier references to Balmoral Road in Derby newspapers but didn’t come up with anything, although I must admit that there are so many hits to ads for Blackpool boarding houses at that address that I didn’t do an exhaustive search.

I also looked for Balmoral Road Derby in 1921 & 1939 but got no results.  It is possible to search the 1921 by employers name, have you tried that

There was a Balmoral Road in Nottingham.

In the 1941 Kelly's Derbyshire, the address given for Rolls Royce Limited was Nightingale Road, Derby.
There's no Hillam; one John Frost, residing at 43 Leopold Street, Derby.

Thank you for your help

Yes thats correct about Gertrude. My nan is living hence why I haven't put her details, but you can likely work out who she is from the census records :)

Ahh possibly Balmoral was a red herring then, the John frost mentioned at leopold street, he worked at rolls royce? If so thats a possible match.

The John Frost at Leopold St, Derby not your man.  Had a different occupation.

However, have found a John Kings in Derby in 1921 who was a fitter at Rolls Royce (no Frost or King).

Through other sources discovered he married a Lilian Emily Farmer in 1917 Derby and they had a son Dennis born 1917.  The family emigrated to Canada in 1928 (is date significant, just a year after your Nan born?).   John Kings died in Ontario in 1939.

A few trees on Ancestry for this family.  However, this John shown as Fitter, not draughtsman.
