Tracking Margaret with an address
« on: Saturday 15 April 23 11:36 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone
Brothers John and George Kingston (sometimes recorded as Kingstone) were each convicted of crimes and sentenced to transportation to Western Australia.  John in 1862 and George in 1866, both never returned.  John is described as being from County Cork and was born in 1841 and George in 1833.  I can track them in Australia, but I really want to track their next of kin.
On both brothers' records, the next of kin is recorded as their mother, Margaret.  She is only recorded as Margaret, so not necessarily Margaret Kingston(e).  Her address for 1862/1866 is the same....High Street, Clough Alley, Wapping.  (NB Clough is my transcribing).  Her maiden is believed to be Foley and Schull East is possibly their origin in County Cork.
Can I track her with such flimsy data?
Best EVER regards,
Stuart McDonald

I'm not sure "Clough Alley" is right. Can you post or link to the images that you've transcribed it from?

I don't think it's permissible, it's from a commercial site.  The handwriting on the original is highly distinct, and I'm 99% sure it reads as Clough.

Use Windows Snipping Tool, or equivalent, and post an image of the address.

Yes I found it too. Definitely, and quite clearly, 4 Plough Alley, High Street, Wapping. And her name is Margaret Kingstone.

Thanks for posting the image which clarifies the name, the image I see is completely different.  Thanks, at least I know now her name in 1867!

John was originally sentenced to 10 years penal servitude. The Penal Servitude Act 1857 had theoretically banned the practice of transportation. He appears to have spent time in Newgate Prison and Millbank Prison before being transferred to Chatham Prison 24 July 1863. On 13 Jan 1864 he sailed for Australia aboard the "Clara".
