Alice Kennard of Lewes, missing from the 1891 census
« on: Saturday 15 April 23 17:05 BST (UK) »
Alice was born in Lewes in 1867 and was an assistant teacher aged 13 in 1881. Her parents were still in the town in 1891 but I have not found Alice anywhere in the country. She didn't get married until 1898. As she would then have been 31 I wondered about a previous marriage but (having spent far too much time on this) haven't found one. I also haven't found any trace of her going overseas. There is one newspaper mention of an 'Alice Kennard or Kenward' being taken on at Ringmer School in 1891, but no evidence to show it's the right person.

I do know all about her life after her marriage, it's specifically her whereabouts from 1881 to 1898 in which I am interested! If anyone has any ideas, let me know!

Sussex Agricultural Express 16 May 1891

...The applicant was a Miss Alice Kennard who is now in a school in Sevenoaks and was formerly on the staff of the girls Central School (Lewes)

That article was under the parish of Ringmer

Yes, that's the bit I saw -- but I've no way of knowing if it's 'my' Alice!

Do you have her marriage certificate, was she shown as a teacher then.  Presumably she had to stop work as she was getting married

Which would be correct if female teachers had to resign from their job prior to getting married

That may or may not be the case, but that was in 1898 -- my concern is to find her in 1891! ;D

Thank you Cathy, but I have checked this and all other marriages of Alice Kennard/s and even Kenward/s for the dates in question without success -- they can all be identified as different women. Kennard/ward was clearly a Sussex surname. If she did get married before the marriage in 1898, she did it somewhere else -- but again, I've checked through all marriages for her name for the whole of the UK!
