Bowdon Parish Location
« on: Sunday 16 April 23 13:50 BST (UK) »
Hello

Hoping someone can help me with the location and modern name (and possibly handwriting) of a place mentioned in a burial record.

Its the second line in the image attached:
John basd son of Sibbil Hurlbote of ??????? was buried on same day [i.e. 22nd January 1658]

I think the text says "Tycroft", comparing the letters with other known words in the passage.
Has anyone heard of that location or care to correct my interpretation?

Many thanks

Neil

I think it's Ryecroft.  There is a place with that name along what is now the M56, a few miles from Ashley, in what I think would probably have been Bowdon Parish at the time.

Much appreciate Lizzie

I can see a "Ryecroft Farm" which isn't a million miles (4 to be precise) from the known location of Sibbil's nephew (my great*8 grandfather) so I think you are right with your take on the location/writing.

Thanks again

Possibly! The Hurlbotes (and various versions of the name) can be found in the general area then. Stretching from Knutsford in the south into what is now the suburbs of Manchester! There appear to be two focal points in the 17th century - one around Ashton and the other around Tatton Park. Haven't yet found the link! Is it a name that's also on your radar?

Best wishes

Neil

Ashton on Mersey is near to Stretford (not far from Old Trafford), although at the time it was in the Bowdon Parish and wouldn't have been built up as it is now.

In old newspapers, throughout the late 18th and early 19th century there are references to a toll gate at Hurlbote on the Wilmslow–Cheadle turnpike (now the B5358/Wilmslow Road). Looking at the 1892 OS map there is a Hurlbote T.P. labelled at the modern junction with the B5094, just south of the B5094 and across the B5358 from the Waggon and Horses, also shown on the OS map.

On the 1844 tithe map this corresponds to plot number 1066, owned by the Trustees of the Wilmslow Road and is indicated as a garden occupied by 'Toll Collector', although the name Hurlbote is not used on the tithe map.

The place name Hurlbote was still in use in the late 19th century:

Quote
Wilmslow to Cheadle: descent out of Wilmslow, followed by a short ascent, then level for a mile through Finney Green, and a descent and steep rise to Handforth, whence it is level and fairly good through Hurlbote Green, to Cheadle, except a short fall before the village.

from: The roads of England and Wales: an itinerary for cyclists, tourists, and travellers, containing an original description of the contour and surface with mileage of the main (direct and principal cross) roads in England and Wales, and Part of Scotland... by Howard, Charles, 1889

There is a modern Hurlbote Lane just north of the old site, east of Wilmslow Road and off Turnpike Crescent.

Also Hurlbote Grange was nearby.
