The Genealogist- Tithe records
« on: Monday 17 April 23 16:03 BST (UK) »

I'm researching the BOALER/BOWLER family who lived in Sycamore House in Barlborough. I've seen that there are tithe records for George and Robert Boaler on The Genealogist website and I'd be grateful if someone could do a couple of look ups for me.

I'm interested in seeing where the land was that they owned and any other details.

Thanks in anticipation

Jenny

So far I have found land owned by George Boaler (blue outline) and John Boaler (red outline). I’ve tried to produce an image of the tithe map overlying the modern map – I hope that helps you to orient yourself.

George Boaler is also the occupier of his land, John Boaler is not. I haven’t noticed any reference to Sycamore House by name.

added: I have searched Boaler/Barlborough and only found George and John.

Wow. Thank you so much for your reply. Sycamore House is adjacent to the land that George Boaler owned. It's next to the dotted red line. Is there a date to go by?

I was also looking for Robert Boaler and the only thing I thought might be of interest was near to the bottom of the page but it just said "Derbyshire" page 4. If it's not too much trouble would you take a look for me please?

I've found newspaper ads with land for sale. In 1855 Robert was the occupier of
The Windmill Hill Close and Stone Quarry
The Plantation
The Near Underhill Close
The Middle Underhill Close
The Far Underhill Close

Unfortunately I've not been able to locate these areas on a map.

In 1862 he was the occupier of
Grass land called Nailor's Yard
Pasture land called Near Town End Leys
Arable land called The Mill Field
  "         "      "     Black Acre Close
  "         "      "     The Greedy Croft

Once again I've not been able to locate these areas on a map.

I'm doing research into Sycamore House as a surprise present so I'm trying to establish who lived there and when. There are 2 listed monuments in the garden dedicated to the Boaler family.

Thanks once again, I really appreciate it.

Jenny

The date of the map is March 1839. I’ll look again for Robert, and I’ll transcribe the names of the various plots.

Here are my transcriptions, there are quite a lot of matches in field names with your newspaper article. Note that I have found some more George Boaler land, but it is well away from where you say Sycamore House is. It’s interesting that the Boaler areas seem to have been shaded differently, including the new one (not shown on my map).

John Boaler owner
all in occupation of Francis Barke(?)
[column 1 name and description; column 2 state of cultivation]
Nether Croft – Grass
Horse Leys – Arable
Top Croft - Grass
Homestead – House and Garden
Orchard – Orchard
Garden – Garden
Barlbro Common Allotment – Grass

George Boaler
all in occupation of George Boaler except where indicated
these are in the red area
Black Acre – Arable
Greedy Croft – Arable
Mill Field – Arable
Town End Lee – Grass
Near Town End Lee – Grass
Orchard and Garden
Nailors Yard – Grass
Homestead and Fold – House and Outbuildings

another group of plots that I missed, lying further to the southeast

Planting – Wood Land
Windmill Hill Close – Arable
Near Underhill – Grass
Middle Underhill – Arable
Far Underhill – Arable
Part of Windmill Close – Grass ***occupied by John Renshaw

I meant to say that I double checked the plots bordering the red blue area on the south east and they are glebe land owned and occupied by The Rev. Martin Stapylton.

White's gazetteer of 1857, entry for Barlborough, states that "The late Mr. George Boaler left by will, the sum of £50 towards the erection of a Wesleyan Chapel here, but it has not yet been applied for that purpose."

The only other relevant information that I can see is a Robert Boaler listed as a farmer. I can't see any reference to Sycamore House – when was it built?

Thank you for that valuable information!
When I visited Barlborough Heritage centre they showed me a picture of the house and underneath it stated that "the house was purchased in 1687 by Thomas Boaler for £300 and he farmed 50 acres of land on Clowne Road. The family lived in Sycamore house until the late 1800's".

I've not been able to trace the source of the info unfortunately.

I'd found a couple of newspaper articles relating to George leaving £50 and the last one was in 1929 that stated the Chapel still hadn't been built!.
