As far as I know, Mary and Mary Ann were considered to be different names.

Mary Ann was all one name. You also may see them now and again as Marianne.
I can remember it coming up, probably on here, parents having daughters Mary and a Mary Ann. I wouldn't think it was a particularly common thing to do. Maybe having a Maria as well as one of the others!
But I am probably completely wrong!

There are indeed some articles in 1924 saying that Mrs Short had just celebrated her 100th birthday, and was born 17 Dec 1824, in Birchington.
Although in "good health", perhaps her memory wasn't quite so reliable!

In reply#9 we have Henry listed as being aged 9, therefore born about 1832? [Mary Ann being 2 years younger.]

In this 1925 obituary about Mary Ann; "Mrs. Short's brother, Mr. H. Southey of Feilding. He is 94". Making his birth year about 1831?

Minniehaha.

In this one Henry is 99

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/DOM19250620.2.66

They would have known that he was a bit younger than Mary Ann so he was said to be 99 when she turned 100.  By the time he died 3 years later they had dialled it back a bit and said he was 98.  He was actually 91.

I think it was just bad math and misunderstandings.  As I said earlier, the marriage cert should show her age.

I notice on many Ancestry family trees they have changed Samuel's year of birth to a year earlier so that it might be be possible for him to be conceived before Richard died.  Hopefully none of them are direct descendants.

Hi minniehaha, Dundee, jonw65 and Eyesee,  I agree that all of the dates given in the news articles are a bit of a mixup.  The many trees on Ancestry for Southee children of John and Ann, his first wife, and Sophia his second wife have varying birth years. The baptism record for Henry Wilkinson (H. T. W.)  is February 20 1837. His mother is Sophia and father John Southee.  Mary baptized at the chapel in July 2 1825, Mother Ann and father John Sophia.  Lastly Mary Ann was baptized at the chapel June 1835, Mother Sophia and father John Southee.  I realize that baptisms can be some time after birth.  The Mary Ann who came out on the Lady Nugent is very likely to be the child born in 1835 and not 1825.

In some of the articles about Mary Ann Short/Southie nearing her 100th birthday or having reached her 100th birthday, her younger brother is mentioned (HTW).  The age gap between them does not tally when you look at the ages on various documents and they also change in each article.

I will do as suggested and order the 1854 marriage certificate of Mary Ann Southee to Richard Clifton and see what is on this.

Regards Kaybron

At least the age of the youngest child on the voyage appears to be in the ball park:

Might be worth posting a separate request for someone to look up the Intention To Marry at Wellington Archives. Will have an age on it.

Ian C

Passenger list for Lady Nugent has youngest daughter as an infant so probably new born.

I have just ordered the marriage certificate for Mary Ann Southee and Richard Clifton.  I have seen one of the Intention to Marry documents that was uploaded on an Ancestry tree for another Southee.  The information was quite useful.
