I agree Ian. I think it more worthwhile to obtain the Intention to Marry. It may have "full age" but then again as you say, it may have the actual age. Whereas the actual marriage certificate/printout is more likely to show "full age". If that was indeed the case.

Sophia did give birth to a daughter, Elizabeth, on the ship.

Elizabeth was born in Kent.

Might be worth posting a separate request for someone to look up the Intention To Marry at Wellington Archives. Will have an age on it.

Archives New Zealand holds "Intention to Marry" notices from 1856 to 1956 ... so the marriage for CLIFTON - SOUTHEE of 1854, won't be available.

The SOUTHEE family group from the webpage mentioned above were:

SOUTHEE
John        40
Sophia     37
William    13
George    11
Henry       9
Mary Ann  7
Alfred       4
Elizabeth   Infant

Spades

The original passenger list does not list the children individually it just gives their ages.  Whoever has made that list has Alfred, George and Henry the wrong way around.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-6P5S-P76

If they were all baptised as infants the order and approximate ages should be...

William  11
Alfred   9
George  8
Mary Ann  6
Henry 4

It does seem like William and Alfred at least might have been a bit older when baptised although John and Sophia did not marry until late 1829.

1854 - CLIFTON - SOUTHEE marriage :

Too late now if certificate for the above has already been ordered :
May not have been available to "Kaybron" (NZSG membership needed to access, I think) ... but noting that NZSG hold a copy of the 1854 marriage record in their "Collections" :

The John / Sophia SOUTHEE family is well documented > with lots of researchers > and 200 plus trees on ancestry.com site.   Worth looking over some of the trees ... and asking questions of fellow researchers.

Still maybe worth obtaining the "Intention to Marry" for the Mary Ann CLIFTON -  Reuben SHORT
1863 marriage.

Hi All, Thank you for the responses, assistance and advice.  I have also ordered the Marriage Printout as this may have more information than is on the Certificate.  This is my first time with New Zealand records so still learning what is available.

I will have a look at some of the trees on Ancestry for John and Sophia Southee.  There are quite a few but will try to find some where there is a closer connection to John or Sophia.  Many of the trees have a huge number of entries on them and the owners may know very little.  When I look at Ancestry hints there are several owners of trees who have uploaded official documents so will message them and try to find out more.

After the Marriage Printout is emailed I will see what this reveals and if necessary see if I can get the Intention to Marry for Mary Ann and Reuben Short.

Thank you to everyone who has offered advice and thoughts.

Regards Kaybron

Hi Kaybron

Yes, it's a daunting task to have to sift through the very many SOUTHEE trees ... but you seem to have a good idea of how to select the trees which might offer more information.   ;)

I would suggest you might also look at the Richard CLIFTON (d. 1858) trees ??   (Quite a few of those too.)     I only glanced over them ... but picked up a date of 5 December 1854 for the marriage to Mary Ann SOUTHEE, which apparently took place at Taita (in the Hutt valley/ Lower Hutt area of Wellington), and that type of detail hints that the info comes from the actual marriage record.

I believe that copies of the early St James records are held at the Lower Hutt Library. Saw them there many years ago. Obtained a photocopy of a burial entry from 1859.

Christ Church at Taita have their own web page with some genealogical info.

Have a couple of families of mine buried in both graveyards, Harris and Edwards.

Hi Eyesee,  Dundee provided a link in an earlier post to the St James records.  I can see that there are other Southee family that I can have a look at.

Lucy2, I do have a very low match (21Cm - 4th to 6th Cousin) on Ancestry where we have a Common Ancestor with a 4th Great Grandfather.  This person does have Southee family on her tree so I will contact and see if there is extra information that she can provide.
