James DAVEY, 1829 - 1865
« on: Tuesday 18 April 23 08:23 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I'm looking for James DAVEY in the 1951 census. I've looked on Ancestry but can't find him.

He was baptised in North Curry, Somerset in March 1829, illegitimate son of Sarah DAVEY.

Sarah subsequently married Job HARRIS in Shepton Beauchamp, Somerset in 1832.

James can be seen in 1841 (as James Harris) living with Job, Sarah and half-siblings Thomas, John, Mary and Edmund in Seavington St Mary, Somerset.

There's no sign of him with the family in 1851, not in any of the other residences in Seavington.

James is with Job and Sarah in Seavington St Mary again in 1861, listed as "son in law".

James died in October 1865, aged 36.

Thanks for any assistance!

Have you looked at the ag lab lodging in Holcombe Rogus?

Thanks,  but I don't think it's the same person. The birthplace is incorrect and there's another entry in 1861 for (seemingly) the same person.

Have you looked at the ag lab lodging in Holcombe Rogus?

Or the ones lodging elsewhere in Somerset according to FreeCen for 1851? I realise the birth places stated are not North Curry but he could have been born elsewhere and baptised in North Curry.
Does he have a wife with him in 1861 or has she died in the intervening 10 years so that he has gone back 'home'? (Sorry, no time to check the 1851 entries on the 1861 census)

His birthplace is recorded in 1861 as North Curry, so I'm assuming that is correct.

The other AgLabs were born in Devon and as that county was a bit of a hotbed for Daveys, they might be different people.

There's no obvious marriage between 1845 and his death in the immediate vicinity. There's one up the road in Langport in Q3 1861 but that's post-census and he died in Seavington St Mary a few years later. The certificate has the mark of a step-niece as the informant, not a wife.

Update: I checked the wedding at Curry Rivel in 1861 and its not the James that I'm looking for.

I'm confused as to whether we should be trying to find James Davey or James Harris. Did he or didn't he take his stepfather's name? Permanently?

He's only shown as James Harris on the 1841 census. In 1861 and on his death certificate, he's shown as Davey.

I have looked in the 1851 census for a James Harris but there's no obvious match.
