I've just received the marriage certificate for James and Mary Ann Bowers (Pickford) 26/09/1853
Residence at the time of marriage is Brinkways.  Has James as 22, and Mary Ann as 21.

His father is listed as James Bowers - Spinner, and I know Mary Ann (Pickford) came from a long line of methodists.  So maybe James Sr and Eliza were as well.

Not sure how well you know the area but “Brinksway” is the main road out of the centre of Stockport towards Cheadle.

Thats possible, but if James Snr was deceased would it not say so on James Jr's marriage cert?

edit - just had another look, there is a small 'dec' in the top right hand corner.  Thanks.

I'm reasonably local, swift bus ride and I went to college there.  Soon as I read Brinksway I thought of the air raid shelters.  I'll have to peruse some old maps and look at what it was like before all the developments.

James Bower 25 pieces (presumably something to do with the cotton trade)y
James 9 y
Remember James's Snr age was rounded down

And a baptism at Hulme Christ Church a non -conformist church
James s of James and Sarah Bowers born 13th Jan 1830 bapt 27 April 1830.

It would not generally be a question that was asked.  It may be that the bride/groom mentioned it when they were asked for their fathers name so the clergy added it to the record.  I have examples where fathers name was entered and noted as deceased when the child was illegitimate and that was not their fathers name.
