Did Edward's mother marry Edmund Crosby in Chorlton in 1916? Per the 1921 census the age is right (57) and she has a son Samuel Pugh with her born in 1900, which could be Edward's brother.

If so then son Edward was killed in September 1916 serving with the Grenadier Guards (22595).

There are a number of pension index cards for this individual, all naming a Mary Ann Crosby as next of kin.

Thank you everyone for help and suggestions
And I’m almost embarrassed to say that further research has now revealed that Sergeant Ted of the 3rd Border Regiment had the surname of Sutcliffe the son of James Sutcliffe & Elizabeth Pugh.  . . same family different sibling.
There is a Bap Rec M/c Cathedral giving DOB 22.12.1891. Parents James  & Elizabeth.
An Edward Sutcliffe married Christina Maloney Liverpool 1919 and both 1921c & 1939 Register support all of this. The marriage record gives parents James & Elizabeth.
It feels like  two different Edward’s . . .but so many coincidences.
The undated letter I have from Ted to his Aunt Annie Pugh  was written whilst he was stationed Gt. Crosby. We assume 1917.
My apologies to everyone but we only have the photo and the letter which gives little information. But I have  now found an official reply to the family in response to their enquiries about Ted. And it is this reply that gives the name Edward Sutcliffe.
So is the Edward Sutcliffe who settled in Liverpool our descendant of the Pugh family. Or two Edward Sutcliffe’s and a lot of coincidences.
In his letter he comes across as a decent young man. And earning Sergeant stripes suggests a degree of responsibility. So I’m struggling with this one.

Do you have Edward Sutcliffe's service number? If it was 9630, he was awarded the Military Medal in 1916, while serving with 1st Battalion, The Border Regiment.

Well Done. That’s him. I’m on such a high! And so grateful.

Going through this old box of photos and papers most of which are tissue thin and faded, almost frightened of removing from envelopes and unfolding.

But there is a reply from the Infantry Record Office Preston 13.9.1915. With a negative response to a family enquiry but names Sergeant James Sutcliffe No 9630.
Any suggestions where to go from here? There must be a citation somewhere.
Can’t tell you how grateful I am.

Edward Sutcliffe's army papers may not have survived but we can piece some of it together from medal rolls etc.

He disembarked at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915 (1914-15 Star medal roll). He's recorded as a Lance Corporal.

He is listed as wounded in a casualty list on 31 July 1915.

Military Medal gazetted on 21 December 1916 and listed in the Liverpool Daily Post of 22 December. Now a Lance Sergeant. Military Medal citations are very difficult to trace - see https://www.longlongtrail.co.uk/research-award-military-medal-mm/

British War Medal and Victory Medal roll lists him as a Private.

It is possible that his army records are still held by the MoD as he was not discharged immediately after the war. He was transferred to the Section B Reserve in June 1921. Might be worth an application.

Just a bit of background information. In Crosby he would have been based at Sniggery Camp (sometimes called Sniggery Barracks) which was on farmland between Great Crosby and Hightown, near Sniggery Woods. It was about 9 miles north of Liverpool town centre, but just a short journey by bus or train.

Thank you so much for all of this.
The background and military references invaluable.
The Liverpool connection and Marriage is intriguing . I’ll see what comes from that.
If anyone has anything to offer please don’t hesitate
Warm Regards.
