Neale 1961 Thankyou very much.
Census 1841; 1861 and 1871  clarifies  movement of WILLIAM HENRY BEST PARENTS JOHN AND MARY ANNE (MOFFAT) from Bishop Wearmouth; Sherburn; Pittington and Newcastle nicely showing their advancement to the Tyne... and William Henry being unemployed Railway Clerk in 1871 still with parents. Need to know where mother  Mary BEST (NEE Moffat, went to in Queensland in 1883 on ship "Chyebassa"...and where all other children came from...Did she go back to England?).                               It looks as though our WILLIAM HENRY BEST born 1849/1850... 'COULD' be a Railway clerk in New Cross, London and South Railway.....in 1891; or have we got two Wm. Henry Bests mixed up? we are sorting out the 'Wheat from the Chaff' in our WILLIAM HENRY BEST and moving forward in our jigsaw. THANK YOU for your time and effort put into our search.

WILLIAM HENRY BEST born 1849/1850... '
Very clearly born in 1849.

Need to know where mother  Mary BEST (NEE Moffat, went to in Queensland in 1883 on ship "Chyebassa"...

This is the mother in the census.
1881 census Westgate Newcastle, Mary Ann Best (William Henry’s mother) is a widow and dressmaker, living with unmarried daughter Catherine

1891 census Gateshead, Mary Ann Best (nee Moffatt) 72, widow, is living in the house of her son John George Best, 51, a colliery weighman.

The son, Horace Best seemed to be a "jack of all trades". Here is his Obit.

NEALE 1961. Thankyou for Obituary for HORACE BEST
Loads of information on Horace, and family. Will follow them up. Brilliant work on your part.  :D

Still trying to see what happened to WILLIAM HENRY BEST - father of HORACE, where and when he died. The rest of his life is a total mystery. We thought he was a wine and fruit merchant IN 1880 we seem to have lost our way and can't tie up the dots.

On the '71 Census William is a "Railway Clerk unemployed". On the 1881 Census he is a "Fruiterer & Com Clerk (Wine & spirit)". I've checked the newspapers 1871-1881 for any mention of William in his new capacity - nothing.

Revisiting the Census made me realise I'd mixed up William Henry's father's given name (John) with Dorothy Charlton's father's given name (Thomas) - hence my being drawn to the 1917 death - apologies.

Hi hanes teulu - no problem, it can be interesting to go down a different path from time to time. I followed one chap, and enjoyed getting to know the family through the records, then discovered I had the wrong initial!  We just picked up a couple of wrong pieces that didn't fit. Thank you for your time given to my quandry; it is very much appreciated.

However, this Mary Ann Best went to Australia in 1883 with three children HORACE,3 DOR,A2 and  JANE a baby...... Why would she go without her husband?
What was he up to?
When did she return?   Her son Horace stayed and died there in 1941.

Can we find the ship and date that she came back to England to live with her unmarried daughter Catherine?   And when did our William Henry the father of her children die?  I need to try and pick her up on the CENSUS'S again to see what happened.
