Another version of reply #9 showing “art dealer” as in census entries.

It seems that he may have extended into photography from being purely an art dealer:

TESTIMONIAL.

Mr. C A. Solomons, Watford.                          ELLER LEA, KENDAL.

SIR,
I have to-day had the opportunily of seeing the two Portraits by Mr. Carl Fischer in the frames provided by you, and the Inscription Tablets in position on the frames. We are much pleased with the work, and the frames seem to be most suitable, of solid oak and well gilt, and of excellent workmanship. They are bold in design, stand out well, and are all the better for their plain and straightforward lines. They harmonise well with the artist's work. – With our thanks, I am yours truly,
HENRY WILSON, J.P., Mayor of Kendal.

Afterthought: this may explain the ‘elaborate mount’ referred to by the OP.

Thanks to all for the investigatory work! As to the elaborate mount, the photograph is 6x4" but the frame is a hardwood gilt measuring 24x22" so that does bear out the report above

Many thanks again for all your help!
