Athlone Newspaper in 1873
« on: Saturday 22 April 23 09:13 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone,
My ancestor Edmund (aka) Edward Whittaker lived in Athlone for about 10 years, dying in Lanesboro on 25th November 1873 and the coroner was called in. I was unable to find an inquest report and I don't know what he was doing in Lanesboro. He was a retired soldier but also a Tailor. I'm wondering if deaths of locals were reported on and what newspaper would likely have covered it if any.
Thanks for any help,
Tilly Ann

Hi Milliepede
Unfortunately not - it raised more questions rather than answers.
I was looking for a comment about his death or an advertisement for his tailoring work.
Regards

Here's the death record. He died at Lanesboro.

OP, have you tried Irish Newspaper Archives https://www.irishnewsarchive.com/ and specifically the Westmeath Independent.

Hi Kiltaglassan,
That's him. He didn't live in Lanesboro(ugh). That's the frustrating part. His pay office for his military pension was in Athlone so he may have lived just slightly over the border of Westmeath. I have no idea as to whether one pay office serviced an entire County.
The Archivist at Longford library has been very helpful but l still have no answers. I can't find a burial or a last known address.
I thought maybe where he lived may have printed something about him dying as it did away from home but British Newspapers Online hasn't yielded any results either.
I hoped someone might know if there was a bulletin or the like printed locally. For example when l lived in the country the little local paper that had a section where local families were congratulated or commiserated on various events.
Thank you so much for your response.
Best Wishes,
TillyAnn
