An unknown woman buried in Newton
« on: Saturday 22 April 23 12:04 BST (UK) »
I've found burial details of an unknown woman buried in Newton le Willows Cemetery but no death entry matches in the GRO database. Could such a burial have been allowed without a death certificate?

Deceased detail
Surname A Woman Unknown

Forename Not recorded

Burial date 31 / 08 / 1904

Location Newton Le Willows Cemetery

Register Number 1905

Age 50   Years

Thank you.

I assume every death should have a death record even if it is shown as unknown in the register of freemds or gro, I would be interested in others ideas
You may never find out if she is listed as unknown

Looking at FreeBMD and Deaths - using just Unknown for "Surname" the message reads:

Sorry, that search found more than 50000 matches and the maximum number that can be displayed is 3000.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

I searched by year and county and it brought records up OK. Generally unknown men considerably outnumber unknown women. I couldn’t see any sign of the woman in this burial, certainly no matching age.

Are the records of the local Poor Law Union Infirmary available? That's where such people were taken around here and sometimrs there's an explanatory note such as where found.
Researching Penge, Anerley, (incuding the Crystal Palace) and neighbouring parts of Beckenham, currently in London (Bromley), formerly Surrey and/or Kent.

An Earlestown Tragedy
Date: Tuesday,  Aug. 30, 1904
Publication: Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser

AN EARLESTOWN TRAGEDY.,SUPPOSED MURDER OF A FEMALE . TRAMP. The dead body of an unknown woman of about fifty, apparently of the vagrant class, has just been found in what ;s known as the Dingle, at Earlestown. Marks of fingers were found on her throat, and appearances point to strangulation Her clothing was much disarranged, and thoie hul evidently been a severe struggle. The body was found by some children the affair is at present a mystery.

Could this be here, it doesn't say exactly when she was found but is in the right area. Poor soul.😥
