Matthew Leslie
« on: Monday 24 April 23 11:31 BST (UK) »
I looking for the parents of Matthew Leslie.
The 1911 census has him living in Newcastle upon Tyne and he gives his birth place as Belfast. He was born on 15 February 1886.
The 1901 census has him at All Saints District Industrial School in Newcastle upon Tyne ( an orphanage ? ) and gives his birthplace as Ireland.
Welcome any new information.

No Matthew Leslie birth in Belfast around that date. Nearest I could find was an un-named male born in the workhouse on 25.1.1886. He was illegitimate and no father’s name is given.

Thank you Elwyn, that looks like him, so the birth date I have of 15 February 1886 taken from his 1939 Register may possibly have been a baptism date !
Thanks also to Carole W and Dundee for their valuable contributions.

Now that I have settled on Matthew Leslie as the unnamed male child born in the Belfast Work House on 25 Jan 1886 and registered on 26 Jan 1886 with mother Mary Leslie and unnamed father am now looking for Mary Leslie's details - parents, home address, circumstances etc
Look forward to any information which will help with this quest.

PRONI has the admission and discharge records. They are not on-line and so a personal visit is required to view them. Either by you or a researcher.

Don’t expect too much from the admission records. It’s fairly basic information. The format varies slightly according to when the records were compiled but, in 1904 for example, you could expect to see:

1.   Admission number
2.   Date of admission
3.   If previously relieved, reference to last register number
4.   Name of Inmate
5.   Residence previous to admission
6.   Sex
7.   Age
8.   If adult, whether single, widower or widow; if child whether orphan, deserted, legitimate or illegitimate
9.   Employment or calling
10.   Religious denomination
11.   Whether disabled and description of disability
12.   Name of spouse
13.   Number of children (which appears to be the number of dependent children, as opposed to the total number of children the person has ever had).
14.   Observations of inmate when admitted eg “Casual & clean” or “To the infirmary”
15.   Date of discharge or death

According to a transcript that I can see, a Mathew Leslie was baptised in St. Patrick's RC Church, Belfast, on 25 February 1886, the date of birth recorded in the baptismal record is an exact match for that stated in the original post, ie. 15 February 1886.  The mother was recorded as Margaret Leslie of 20 Union Street, no father was recorded and a comment on the record says that Mathew was illegitimate. The sponsor was a Catherine Donaghey.

I haven't yet found a civil birth registration for this baptismal record, I suspect that the one found by Elwyn at reply # 1 is it, despite the difference in birth date and mother's forename.

The 1887 Belfast street directory lists 20 Union Street as vacant ground.
