Where to search?
« on: Tuesday 25 April 23 03:38 BST (UK) »
As I’m working through my family tree I’ve found a large number moved to Canada. I’m able to find some information through Family Search, but I’m wondering if there’s an official database like Scotland’s People where I can view the original documents? I’ve tried the Canadian archives, but can’t seem to find what I’m looking for. Thanks!

Canada has strict privacy laws.
I think the more recent events you would have to hope to find in the newspapers.
But if you post a problem or two I am sure someone will come along with actual pertinent advice.

Oh ok. Well I’m just trying to view the actual documents. I see the information through Family Search, but I know certain names are misspelled on there as an example. I was just hoping there was a way to request those documents at least. The ones I’m interested in are from 1900-1920’s.

Well up to 1923 should fall out of the 100 year rule.
Ask the specific question…..someone will know.

It’s not a question I was just asking how I can view the original documents. It sounds like I can’t though.

Ancestry has some Canadian records. I looked up a marriage the other day in the 1920s in  Ontario and the original document was there.

It really depends on the source of the document. Each Canadian province keeps its own records so if you are looking for a record in New Brunswick for example then you will need to look there.
If you either post a link to the record mentioned in Family Search or give us a better idea of the location then we can probably help.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

For example I know the mother’s name is actually spelled “Robina” and that the name of the daughter is “Euphemia”. But otherwise I’d just like the actual document for my own records.
