McNeill’s of Buchanan, Stirlingshire

Searching for a great ancestor and family, Patrik McNeill… is said to have been born about 1620 to 1630, in or near Buchanan , Stirlingshire…

Wife is Marion Gaw or Gow, or Gall…I have her surname as Gaw….but I’m not 100% sure..

Thier son Duncan McNeil, born 22 January 1654, also stated as being from Buchanan, Stirlingshire

Any help on this Patrick McNeill and associated family members is greatly appreciated..

Looking at the index to ScotlandsPeople, the following come up in Buchanan (probably the dates of baptism rather than birth - you have to see the originals to know):

Johne (13-3-1648) - parents Patrik McNeille & Mareon Gow

Janet (25-3-1649) - parents Patrik Moir/McNeilles & Mareon Gow

Donnald (14-9-1651) - parents Patrik McNeill & Marie Gaw

Duncan (22-1-1654) - parents Patrik McNeil & Marion Gaw

Agnes (7-9-1656) - parents Patrik Moir/McNeill & Marion Gaw

John (20-3-1659) - parents Patrik Moir & Marion Gaw

This looks like the same couple. Have you looked at all these baptisms? By doing so, the names of witnesses might help pinpoint other family members.

Are there any other McNeill family in this area that you my be able to find?

I would like to go back further in my family line than Patrik McNeill, but I can not associate him with anyone of the other McNeill’s… I can not find anything else for Patrik McNeill….

I know there are several McNeill families in the general region, on the Isle of Bute, Barry, Colonsay…

Very hard for me to link to other families …

Sorry for the delay. As ColC has said, the registers for Buchanan start in 1646, so there will be no record of your Patrick's baptism. Have you had a chance yet to look on ScotlandsPeople (again, see ColC's link) at the original entries for the baptisms of Patrick's children? If you are lucky, the names of the witnesses might help you get back to the previous generation. That would be the best way forward. The entries may also tell you more about Patrick himself.
