Matthew LONG 1804-1878
« on: Wednesday 26 April 23 19:19 BST (UK) »
Can  anyone find out anything about a Matthew LONG, "Gentleman", aged 74, who died in Bath on the 18th Nov 1878 at 8 St Mary's Buildings.  The informant was his niece Emma Elizabeth EDGECUMBE and I believe that address was where Emma's mother, Elizabeth EDGECUMBE nee LONG, Matthew's sister, was living.  Another brother was a James LONG who was a Hairdresser in Bath. Their parents were James & Elizabeth LONG who in 1841 were living in Weston, Bath.  I think that Matthew married a Sarah CLIFT but know very little of his life or where he lived. Would love to know more and where his father, James LONG was born.  Thank you.

Have you looked for him on earlier census entries 1841-1871?

https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/list?cqs=england+census

1841 shows James & Sarah not b Somerset.  Have you found either of them on the 1851?  There is a 70yr old James Long  in Swainswick - looks possibly the same address as 1841 - have you checked him out?

Thank you for replying
I haven't found Matthew LONG on any census.  Have just discovered that his daughter, Sarah Jane, died in Boston Mass, in 1911 having married an Abram BANTA.  Her death certificate gives her parents as Matthew LONG and Sarah CLIFF [sic] both of Bath.
I don't think that the James & Sarah LONG in Swainswick are connected to this family.  The James & Elizabeth LONG in Weston in 1841 were both dead by 1851.  James in July 1850 and Elizabeth in Sept 1846. Matthew and several of his siblings were buried by the Argyle Independent Church at their Snow Hill Burial Ground, Grateful for any help finding what happened to Matthew and where his father was born.  Thank you

He's certainly hiding on all censuses - wonder if he was abroad?  Tried Scotland & Wales censuses - zilch!!
