Denis McGrath
« on: Thursday 27 April 23 13:17 BST (UK) »
Trying to find parents of Denis McGrath married Catherine Collins married on 15 February 1844 in Kilteely and Drumkeen Limerick Ireland.  Sorry do not have any birth dates.  Children: Patrick, Catherine, John, Denis, Honora, Terence, Maria, James and Timothy.
Know that Honora, Patrick and Denis went to NSW Australia.  Any help would be appreciated.

The first step is to establish when Denis died, so that you can find an estimated year of birth.

Civil registration of birth, marriage and death began for all of Ireland in 1864 (1844 for Protestant marriages). The Irish civil records can be viewed for free on irishgenealogy.ie .

This looks like the correct death for Denis:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1895/05927/4683108.pdf

He was approximately 80 years old in 1895, giving him an estimated birth year of 1815.

Catherine outlived him, dying in 1907:

She can be seen with their son Michael on the 1901 census:

In terms of a good second step, I would recommend going through the baptisms of all of Denis and Catherine's children to find the names of the godparents, as godparents were often relatives (usually siblings) of the couple.

The Kilteely and Drumkeen parish registers can be viewed for free here:
https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0271

From what I can see, their children were:
- Timothy Magrath baptised 17 Feb 1845
- Patrick Magrath baptised 27 Apr 1846
- Michael Magrath baptised 11 Jun 1848
- Catherine Magrath baptised 9 Apr 1850
- Denis Magrath baptised 3 May 1852 at St Michael's, Limerick city, Limerick
- John Magrath baptised 1 Mar 1854
- Denis McGrath baptised 11 Aug 1855
- Honora Magrath baptised 21 Feb 1856
- Terence Magrath baptised 20 Jul 1858
- Maria McGrath baptised 1 Apr 1861
- James Magrath baptised 10 Mar 1864
- Timothy Magrath baptised 24 Sep 1866

Apologies if I have missed any.

If you look at the children’s baptisms for Sponsors’ names, they can often be helpful.

I looked earlier, and saw Timothy Collins was a sponsor for a child (can’t remember which sorry) but I also think he was a witness to the marriage.
He could be a brother maybe?
Tithe Applotment records http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/ shows a Timothy Collins in Kildromin in 1826. He may be Catherine’s father?

Just for information and for you to consider.
Denis and Catherine had a daughter, Honora. That might be a family name.
There is a marriage in Kilteely parish https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000632738#page/221/mode/1up
22nd February 1838
Thos Cahil to Honora Magrath at Ball…green..
(Difficult to find and read).
Tithe Applotment records show John Magrath at Ballinagreena, Kilteely - 1826

It will be difficult to locate parents for Denis McGRATH and Catherine COLLINS, married 1844, with any certainty when little information is recorded.

Try to fill in the many gaps regarding later life of their children, beyond Patrick, Johanna and Denis who went to Australia.  Along the way you might find reference to cousins, aunts etc in an era of chain migration.

What do you know about the lives of Patrick, Johanna and Denis in Australia.

Are you doing your own researching or using information that you find in online family trees?
