Looking for Orchardson (sometimes transcribed as Orchardton)
« on: Friday 28 April 23 01:18 BST (UK) »
Any Orchardsons out there?

When I came across this unusual name I thought it would be easy to find information.

However not coming up with much.

I’ve got Anne Orchardson (my great x3 grandmother) Dob 2/8/1807 giving birth to James Mitchell 1/1/1834 (Cortachy and Clova)
the father being Alexander Mitchell. From James Mitchell’s wedding certificate it looks like Anne Orchardson and Alexander weren’t married. Looking on Scotlands people there are quite a few Alexander Mitchells who could potentially be the father but I’ve no idea how to whittle them down.

Ann’s father and mother are James and Elizabeth (nee Dempster) Orchardson married in Brechin 29/1/1796(I’ve got the wedding record from Scotlands People)
James was baptised 17/9/1775 (info from Scotlands people) in Brechin.
James had 5 siblings all born in Brechin between 1767 and 1778.

James father is Peter Orchardson married to Jean Downie. They married 25/10/1765 (downloaded details from Scotland’s People.

I can’t find anything earlier  for the Orchardsons
Can’t find anything earlier than that.

I did download Jean Downie’s birth record September 1744 Guthrie but it’s such poor quality I can’t make out anything.
(I’ll try to put it onto the handwriting deciphering chat)
I can’t find any death records.

Any help would be appreciated.

From the Kirk Sessions 18 Aug 1833 (hope the link works) we read that Ann Orchison stated she was with child to Alexander Mitchell residing at Dameye in Kirriemuir.

There is an Alexander MITCHELL baptised in Kirriemuir in 1813 to Patrick MITCHELL and Martha HOOD.
Patrick and Martha are having children baptised in Kirriemuir between 1800 and 1818.

This MIGHT be Martha in 1841 census with two of her adult children?

What occupation do you see for Alexander Mitchell on his son’s marriage certificate?
Does it correspond to the occupation of the Alexander Michell, born in Kirriemuir, who is in Cortachy and Clova in the 1861- 71 census, - a ploughman and agric labourer?

Can you explain why you know that Ann is correct, when there is more than one possibility?

Regarding Ann Orchiston. The census records her birthplace differently each time, but year of birth about 1806.

Hi she’s the only Ann Orchardson I can find who could possibly have given birth to a son in 1834.
