HELP - iphone phone number set up

On the Regular alpha keyboard of the iPhone, press the 123 button on the left. 
On the next ‘window’ press the #+= button in the same spot .

(I still think putting 00 instead of the + ought to work)

Thanks to all who took the time to reply with suggestions!

I went back to the 'process/form'...

For the option of 'use this number', instead of ticking it, I left it as was/ignored it...

Further down, the option I was having trouble with, I typed in my phone number 079 etc. & it didn't show in red as being wrong!!!...

I can now report, I've succeeded in managing to get Facebook Messenger which was what I was initially trying to do but had to go through hoops to get there!!!

I've no intention of buying iTunes etc. but had to give my bank details to get Messenger which is a bit of a mystery as I don't recall having to provide bank details when I installed it on my laptop many years ago.

I hope this helps other 'newbies' to the world of the iPhone
