Longest segments in dna
« on: Friday 28 April 23 23:05 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone lv just got a 1st cousin's son match on Myheritage, l do know who it is but in the largest segment l was surprised the number was 124.9cM
In my other matches with 1st cousins children the figure is usually in the sixties.

It’s not an exact science - variations happen.

For interest, have you tried entering the shared cMs here:

Thanks for your reply Ruskie I do accept nothing is  exact but as l have a number of 1st cousins children popping up none have that amount of longest segments most are in the 60cM even my 1st cousins son who we match over 23 shared segments longest 74.9cM gives 623.5 cM 8.8%
The recent one is shared over 14 segments longest 124.9 gives 451.3cM 6.4%
I just thought figure may have been a typo mistake seemed large -
Perhaps on over thinking lol

I'm interested if you find out if there is a significance in these results.

I don't know anything about MY HERITAGE but manage a dozen DNA results on ancestry

I don't often look at the segments .

I have the same match on ancestry, myheritage and livingdna. We have both tested with Ancestry and added the raw data to the other sites. We are fairly distant relatives but the results on the different sites show quite a variation.

Ancestry; 40cM across 4 segments. longest segment 15cM. Estimated 4th cousin but amended as 3rd when looking at the tree

MH; 69cM across 5 segments, longest segment 17cM. Estimated as 'Parent's 3rd cousin'

Livingdna; 79.4cM, no longest segment information and estimated 2nd cousin.

-
I have another match appear on Ancestry, Livingdna & Gedmatch, I can't say who they tested with but  the cM figure on Ancestry is 15 whereas Livingdna and Gedmatch both show 33.

I don’t have any matches with any first cousins or their children, and I don’t generally look at the largest segments or number of segments.

However, if it is of any help, I have an example.

On My Heritage my father has match with his first cousins daughter thus:
7.9% shared DNA
563.2 cM
20 segments
Largest segment 123 cM

I did a lot of reading  last night and although l don't understand all of it does make sense that we can get varying amounts of dna coming down the line -
The person who came up with long segment only on Myheritage but l will look at other matches l have on Ancestry & Livingdna

In terms of genealogy research it shouldn't really matter if 600cM of dna is distributed in long chains across a few segments or short chains across several segments, it's still 600cM of dna.
