How Was the Established Church Supported in Corporate Towns and Cities?
« on: Saturday 29 April 23 05:34 BST (UK) »
As you are probably all aware, tythes were payable to support the clergy of the Established Church.
But tythes were only payable on agricultural land, and were not payable on any land within the boundaries of corporation towns and cities. [Some extra-parochial areas were also exempt].

So, how were the clergy of the Established Church supported in town/city parishes? In much reading over the years, I never saw an answer to this question.

Just to bump this - no one?

I am interested partly for historical understanding, but also because of the possibility of the existence of records of some sort.  The Church of Ireland clergy in town and city parishes must have had some official mechanism for their support, as they did not get tythes, which was for agricultural land. That being so, I can't imagine that there wasn't some record kept of how much income was due, and from what source.

Presumably you've come across the Board of First Fruits which was responsible for funding the building of new churches?
But struggling to establish how the churches were funded re. day to day running.

Check out "Church rate" or "Church tax" and the abolition 1868?

As I understand it, the church rate was for the upkeep of the church, and services to keep the church running, but not for the the clergy. It is specifically what mechanism was used to finance the clergy  in municipal towns and cities that I have never seen described.

It may be possible that the church rates were different in corporate towns, to also allow for support of the clergy, but if so I have never seen a statement to that effect.

Yes, I know of the Board of First Fruits (BFF). But they are the opposite of what I am inquiring about. The BFF took money FROM the clergy, they did not GIVE money to them. The BFF money went to the purchase of glebe land, and construction of new glebe houses and churches.
