1828 Cordell baptism in Woodford
« on: Sunday 30 April 23 17:35 BST (UK) »
Hi
If anyone has access to baptisms in Woodford, could they do a lookup for me please?
I have a Sarah Cordel, who was daughter of John Cordel and she married James St Pierre in 1852 in Barkingside. In the 1861 census she says that she is 33 years old and born Woodford Bridge.
As that parish was part of Woodford in 1828, perhaps she is recorded there?
I have tried FindMyPast and FS and Ancestry without much luck.

Have you seen the 1851 census entry for a Sarah Cordell, born c. 1831 in Woodford, living in Barking, Essex with Martha Cordell, born c.1801 in Chigwell, and Thomas Cordell born c.1833 in Woodford? The family was also living in Barking in 1841, but Martha is widowed so cannot confirm husband's name as John.

Hi
Yes, I have. That is my other Cordell family in Barking, their father was William. I have yet to prove a connection other than through the St Pier family. That Sarah's brother Richard was connected by marriage to a cousin of James.

That is my other Cordell family in Barking, their father was William.

There are some BTs for Woodford on FamilySearch
William and Susan Cordle were having children baptized there.
Daughter Sarah Elizabeth Cordle bap 14 Nov 1830.
Abode Woodford Bridge.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9Q97-YSLD-4YS

In fact much as in the 1841 census, when they were living in Barkingside, bar Martha and Jane.
James, 1825, Richard, 1828, Sarah Elizabeth, 1830, Thomas, 1833
Also Elizabeth Sarah in 1824

William Cordle of Woodford married Martha Martin, 21 June 1835, Chigwell.
Was he a widower?

Who were the witnesses on the 1852 marriage?

Hi
thanks for Jane's baptism, I didn't have that.
Yes, I believe that to be William's burial.
In the 1835 marriage, nowhere is it stated that William is a widower, but the fact that his children appear with Martha in 1841, implies that. The only obstacle to that is a lack of a burial for Susan/Susannah.
With the 1852 marriage, there is also an 1851 marriage for a Sarah Cordell, daughter of William, in West Ham, to John Woodhouse. At first I thought her the daughter of my William but found in the census that she was born 1828 in Waltham Abbey. There could be other marriages.
I haven't found any witnesses for the 1852 marriage either.
I suspect that the two Sarahs may be cousins but I have no proof of that yet.

Sarah had a brother James CAUDLE aged 60 single living with them in 1881 also born Woodford. 4 Hersom Place, Barking

Then there is a marriage of a James Caudle (full age) 9 September 1876 that has reputed father **James St. Pero
St James the Great Bethnal Green
Married Eliza Ann Trimmer 20 whose mother Ann Trimmer is listed where the father normally is.

(1851 census the family name was spelled St. Pero)

I wondered if he was the James age 10 living with James and Sarah St Pierre in 1861

Hi
Yes he was the same, and was known as James Caudle St Pierre for a lot of his life.
With regard to his marriage, when I looked for the marriage I found another James Caudle, a Herbert James Caudle, getting married in that same year in Fulham, as opposed to Bethnal Green where my James got married. It was certainly an unusual entry.
Interestingly, James does seem to be a bit fluid with his name as in 1881 he is entered as James St Pier Cordle, yet when the son named after him is born, the son is James Richard St Pier.
A little consistency would be nice!
