He probably wasn't sure what name to use. He was born James Cordle  Illegitimate son of Sarah
Registered Epping September 1851 quarter vol. 12 page 95.

Sarah Cordel married James St. Pierre 1 August 1852.

He must have grown up thinking he was St Pierre but found out he was really Cordel/Caudle officially
his parents married about a year after he was born.

Do you think William is connected to the Chigwell family?
Richard Cordell married Rachael Willson, 6 Feb 1785
Children baptized at Chigwell, including
John, 29 May 1791 (Cordel)
William, 31 July 1796 (Cordle)

FreeReg has them
https://www.freereg.org.uk/

Though William's age on death in January 1839 would fit John better!

Is there a marriage for William and Susan(nah)? :-\
One for a John at St. George Hanover Square, 22 May 1820
John Cordel + Susannah Breach

Seems a bit odd to mention that, but there are some oddities with this case.

Burials for Woodford don't appear to be on line, although Freereg has the baptisms.

I no longer have a subscription to the Essex Record Office, but perhaps the poster Helen Bedford could
purchase a one day sub and go through the burials register.
