Kendal Parish Registers 1926
« on: Sunday 30 April 23 23:23 BST (UK) »
Can anyone who has access to above please have a look at the baptism for Richard CRAYSTON on 26 January 1926. Familysearch has his mother as Mary and his father as ?CRAYSTON.
I would like to know if it mentions if he was illegitimate or if the entry is incomplete.

Thank you so much.
Michelle

Hi,

I think you meant to write 1826?:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JSKH-CQ1

Looks to me like an entry for an illegitimate child, but I cannot see the original on any of the big subscription sites.

Yes I did. Thank you for looking. I just wanted to be sure, according to Richard's marriage certificate his father was Richard CRA(Y)STON a victualler. I can find nothing looking likely to be them.

There is another baptism at Kendal for a George Crayston 17 Jul 1831 - mother Mary Crayston no father mentioned.  Looking at the transcript on FindMyPast for the baptism of Richard it also shows mother Mary Crayston with no father mentioned.

When did Richard marry.  Do you have him on census in 1841/51

George is indexed as Craston on the 1841.  Aged 10 & living with an Isaac Scott aged 60

Richard is shown as Crayson aged 15 & appears to be living with a William & Margaret Lewis. Looking at his occ & that of William Lewis I suspect Lewis may have been his employer

1841 there is a Mary Craston aged 40 born in county occ charwoman.  She is in Sandes Hospital Westmorland

In 1851 she is still in Sandes hosp aged 49 - unmarried - & still shown as Craston.  Described  as "daughter of Mary"  reference to another Mary Craston aged 79 - widow - also in Sandes

Craston and Crayston are surnames often entered confusingly. Both are correct. The Kendal Craston name likely related to Richard Craston of Kendal a line descending from Westmoreland. One of which is my family Craston line Kirkby Lonsdale from c1700.
Craston
Bimson
Walker, Halifax
Bardsley, Cheshire
Bentley, Halifax
Fawcett, Westmorland

Thank you Simon.
Do you have any idea who Richards parents were?
Do you know if Richard ran a pub?
