There are four births showing on SP with mother's name of Nay listed. All in the St Mary's district of Dundee:

1914 John
1916 Robert
1918 Mary Ann & Alice - must likely twins.

From your family tree, and the 1921 census image, third son Constantine born 1920? Mary Ann is there. Alice died before 1921?

In terms of deaths, where mother's maiden name of Nay has been included, there are two deaths:

1924 - Nellie, aged 2 - Lochee
1987 - Mary Ann, aged 69 - Dundee

Hi Monica, thanks, yes I've got as far as you have! The marriage in 1914, first son John born 1914, then Robert 1916 & Constantine 1920, then twins Alice (d 1918) & Mary Ann 1918 and Nellie 1922, d 1924.  I'm assuming the other two daughters were born after 1924 and that they would be Lochee births as the family were in St Mary's St until the 1937 electoral register.

You can see the naming pattern in action to some extent - John james's mother was Mary Ann, and Charlotte's mother was Alice.  Unfortunately John was an only child and Charlotte only had one sister, Jane.  There's a Jane born 1922, can't be a twin because not the same district.  Then there's a Jeanie born 1927.  Would that be a form of Jane? - Nellie is quite informal so they obviously weren't worried about that.  I'd have to order a hard copy to see the parents because of the 100-year rule for births - and obviously we want to avoid that! ;D

I'm trying to link two families, one in Dundee and one in Cardiff.  I was hoping that John & Charlotte's children would have had children and that a surname would lead to a DNA match that could prove the link.

Thanks again  :)

I have just noticed there is a tree online also suggesting a Margaret born in 1923, who married in Dundee in 1947 to a William McKenzie, with a Jean Gallacher as witness.

Marriage record should show parents and either prove/disprove possibility.

Given the name the tree appears under, is it possibly your own tree @beckymears? If yes, you seem to already have some of the names we are suggesting, including those in this reply and my reply #14 above, despite saying earlier in this thread "Thank you - but I don't have their first names to search them in 1939 ".

@beckymears Does this mean since you last posted in May you have progressed your research and no longer need assistance via this thread? An update would be helpful to save others continuing to look for info you now possibly have, thanks.

*** Cross Hospital, Dundee.
That will be Kings Cross. It was the fever/isolation hospital IIRC.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Is there anywhere in Dundee you can go to look at physical copies of the Courier? The digital version seems to have lots of gaps.
The Local History Dept of the Central Library in Dundee is your best bet, they have digital subscriptions and also microfiche copies of newspapers - the staff are very helpful.  They also have physical copies of street directories which may also be worth looking at.
