Help identifying address please.
« on: Monday 01 May 23 18:46 BST (UK) »
Hello

Hoping someone can help identify the birth place for the entry of the first person in the attached (for Thomas Davies age 30 Colliery Worker, living at 81 Edward St, Caeracca??, Dowlais) as it might help me trace him in earlier census records. I think the first word “translates” to Sebastopol. The second word I am not sure of PontllotynMon? I did initially think it was Sebastopol, Pont….., Monmouthshire but at the side it says Glamorgan for all and in 1921 his birth address is just Dowlais. So I think it is probably Sebastopol, Pontypool, but no idea what PontllotynMon could be?

Thank you

Other Edward St residents have included "Caeracca" in their address (tho' the enumerator discounts it on the List.
Plenty of mentions in Welsh newspapers eg "Gladys Street, Caeracca, Pant", "Morlais Villa, Caeracca, Pant, Dowlais" and so on.

Thank you very much for the replies. It’s starting to make more sense. As Sebastopol is nowhere near Pontlottyn (35 miles away), I think Sebastopol is actually referring to a house/street in Pontlottyn, as the other birth addresses detailed refer to a specific address. I can also see why in 1921 he may have just put Dowlais as it is only around 5 miles away. Does anyone know where the boundary between Dowlais, Glamorgan and Pontlottyn, Monmouthshire is/was. I am guessing it slots somewhere in between the 2?

Even with this information I am still struggling to find Thomas Davies in earlier censuses. In 1911 he was living with his wife Margaret Ann Davies (nee Kinsey). The census states they had been married 11 years, whereas the actually married in 1902, presumably this difference is to give the first born Thomas Francis Davies age 10 a degree of legitimacy.

There's a Pontlottyn just 4.7 miles (8 minutes in the car) east of Dowlais

I agree, I think that’s it, with Sebastopol being a house/street or even possibly a farm in Pontlottyn
