James Clarke was an officer in the 12th Lancers.

Can anyone tell me who his wife was?

Looking at the children's baptisms (mostly in Salcombe Regis), her name was Eliza.

Julia 1816
Frances Emma 1816 (born 1815)
Isabella Mary 1820 (added after correction - baptised at Sidmouth)
Emily 1823
Eliza 1829
William Hill Dawe 1831

Eldest daughter Susannah Hawley was baptised at North Cadbury in 1814.

Possible marriage at North Cadbury in 1812: James Clarke and Eliza(beth) Bennet(t)

Good Morning
For foreigners up North like myself  Sid Abbey is between Sidmouth and Salcombe.
James Clarke was born 1788 and buried at Salcombe  15.4.1845
His PCC Will gives his wife as Eliza
It looks like they married at North Cadbury 13 Sep 1812 .She was a Miss Bennett age 20.He was over 21 years.
Children Julia Salcombe born 16 Jan 1815 bapt 19 May 1816,Frances Emma 19.5.1816 born 16 Jan 1815  ,Emily 4.5.1823 ,James Archdell Clarke 1827 ,Eliza 2.11.1829,William Hill Dawe 23.8.1831,and Eliza Harriet Selwyn 14.11.1832

But of course I could be wrong and there may be another James Clarke with different dates.Does that fit the man you are after?
Beat me to it.

Thank you all for your swift replies.

That does seem to be the right family, in spite of the slight discrepancies between the two lists of children baptized.  I have Isabella born in Sidmouth 15 Sep. 1820, but I forget where the information came from.  Is her baptism recorded?

Thank you, Shaun.  I suppose it didn't state her date of birth?

Just a small clarification. Salcombe is the well-known port in the South Hams area and is some sixty km as the crow flies from Sidmouth.
Salcombe Regis is a small village slightly to the East of Sidmouth.
Sid Abbey is on the outskirts of Sidmouth on the way to Sidford and can be found on Google maps.
