Older RC Churches in Kilrea area
« on: Tuesday 02 May 23 17:03 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Would anyone know the older RC churches around Kilrea?

My family lived mostly in one road, Hervey Hill RD in Co Londonderry. They went to church at the Drumagarner St Marys Chapel which i understand is from about the mid 1840s. The records that are online seem to be newer. I have seen the ones on http://magheragenealogy.org/drumagarner-chapel/ no joy.

I have seen the pinned post in this forum about graveyards and churches but i dont know what church to look for.

I was hoping to find records for my GGG grand mother Bridget Kane and the record of her marriage to James Mooney. They lived at 9 or 11 Hervey Hill.

Bridget died in 1903, the age is iffy, 103 on the official record, 100 in the newspaper, probably neither! I dont know where she was buried, she died at the house at the above address which she shared with her son James Mooney, not sure what happened him.

I can see Swatragh at the other end of their road, also with a newer church.

Any ideas of where the events of her life may have been recorded? I got her kids baptism records but they are from a big book which does not indicate the church.

I understand the records may not even be digitised but its possible I could try to get them in person this summer if i knew where to go.

Grateful for any ideas.

Thanks

I'm not sure of earlier dates but as far as I know the present Chapel at Drumagarner (built 1842) was a replacement for an older building on Hutchinson's land and the old font went missing for a number of years but was found and moved to the present building.
Like many other places, the early records for Drumagarner no longer exist.
Road names in this area only came into usage in around early 1970s and before that your family's 'address' would have been the townland.
Here are Bridget Mooney and son James in 1901 census living in the townland of Killygullib Glebe-

This shows the location of that townland-

The online Valuation revision book which follow on from the printed version of Griffith's Valuation (mid- 1800s) until almost up to 1930 may help you pinpoint a location better when used in conjunction with Griffith Valuation maps.

Hi Aghadowey and thanks. Oh that's a shame that earlier records have gone, i was really hoping to the find a marriage record (more likely than a birth record) just to give an idea of how old Bridget really was.

I can see the townland names being used on some of the kids baptism records, Tamlaght being one of them. I was hoping there was an older church or something nearby that would reveal more!

I was thinking her grave, which might be a 100 years newer than her birth record might have been put in a different church that she may have attended or been baptised at in pre 1840's. Thus being a key to the past.

A shame there is not a searchable database for graves! Of all of the children she had, it seems like the only two that did not move away were both unmarried. The son mentioned above and a daughter, Sarah so i cant track down any known relatives who might know in the area!

I will look through some of the links you provided to see if can find any possible Kane relatives to research in more detail.

Many thanks.

It's quite likely that she might have been buried at Drumagarner without any headstone on the spot.
