Mabel, I also wondered if Edward was not the father of William but he is listed on the army record as son.
There could be several reasons, I suppose: Annie had no children; she might have helped out and then the arrangement became permanent etc.

Annie and her husband John had no children so maybe your thought could be possible.

After further investigation I have now found the missing link. Annie was living with an uncle in Holsworthy during the 1901 census.
