1841 census Boarding School, Giggs Hill, Claygate, Thames Ditton
« on: Friday 05 May 23 12:55 BST (UK) »
Hi
I am interested in a pupil who was at the above school.  In the 1841 census schedule it is listed after Collar Maker's Hill and Salt Box Hall and before the Angel Inn.  I am keen to find out more about the school and it's history, does it still exist, are there pictures of it, and where was/is it exactly.

Many thanks

Staffs: Nutt, Bowring

Lincs: Plummer, Broughton, Wellbourne

The Angel Inn at Thames Ditton still exists and was listed in 1841 amongst entries for Giggs Hill.

Collar Makers Bridge appears to be listed next to Salt Box Hall (which is on Giggs Hill)

Could this be the Hall, other results on google suggest it is on the Portsmouth Road

The schoolmaster was Thomas Style. Various members of the Style family were resident on census night. Papers in 1845 report the dissolution of the partnership of Thomas and Reverend Frederic Style, schoolmasters, Thames Ditton.

By 1871 the school had closed but Rev Frederic Styles was still there with his family. The census runs like this:

Giggs Hill - Lewis Boughton
Portsmouth Road, Angel Inn - Charles Nye
Do - Henry Packham
Do The Cottage - James Templeton
Portsmouth Road - Frederic Styles
Do - William Potter
Do - Rose Cottage - James Bartlett
